Robotics researchers map the gap between demos and deployment
Y Combinator’s robotics event puts an overdue focus on the unglamorous work behind capable physical systems. Speakers argue that strong vision-action demonstrations do not solve real-world modelling, tactile sensing, deformable materials or the gradual drift between a robot’s expected and actual body.
The talks also offer concrete approaches. Physical Intelligence presents multi-scale embodied memory, intended to help a robot continue longer tasks and recover from interruptions. SimTool Reel shows a simulation-trained policy controlling a hand and arm across unfamiliar tools from human-specified goal trajectories.
